Ever heard of Deepfakes? According to CNN:
“Deepfake video is hyper-realistic manipulated video made using artificial intelligence technology. Deepfakes can be so convincing it can be difficult to determine what has been manipulated and what has not.” (link)
So why are people freaking out about Deepfakes?
“An increasing number of lawmakers are warning that a form of video manipulation, known as deepfakes, could be the next stage of information warfare ahead of the 2020 US Presidential election […] “As deep fake technology becomes more advanced and more accessible, it could pose a threat to United States public discourse and national security, with broad and concerning implications for offensive active measures campaigns targeting the United States,” the lawmakers wrote.” (link)
CNN has made a fun, interactive webpage that gives you a closer look in to what a deepfake is and how to spot one.
There is a quiz on the page that asks you to guess which video is the fake – I got 2 out of 4! Not good
“But deepfake technology also has a dark side. Both private citizens and celebrities have seen their faces put, without their permission, onto existing pornographic videos. Posing a new challenge for privacy issues.” (50sec in)
National security and ruining reputations aside, deepfakes can sure be funny sometimes:
